Can custom fields that are not used on any screens be safely removed?

We have too many custom fields and we know they impact performance.   Can we safely move any custom field that is not used on any screens or project to trash?

Hi Carl - sure you can do that. And if somebody hollers because it is gone - then just restore it. 

The other thing I  do is to run a query to see where the field is not empty. Something like:

"Carl's Custom Field" is not empty

Then order by the Updated field and see if the results are really old.
