Can't end sprint "there are incomplete subtasks" issue. How do I move tasks to next sprint?

Carlos_Massiah April 7, 2020

Normally Jira automatically shuffles open tasks into the next sprint. The documentation:
https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/complete-a-sprint/
suggests that it should give you an option of what to do with the open tasks after hitting "complete sprint".
At the moment I can't end the sprint giving me this error:  "Sprint cannot be completed as there are incomplete subtasks on the following issues:"

How do I get it to automatically move the remaining tasks into the next sprint?

Edit: Created a test board with incomplete subtasks, the test board pops up the dialogue the that is shown in the documentation. This is what I was expecting. I don't see why there is a difference in behavior between the two boards.

we have the same issue here. open stories can't be carried over as we are getting the error message on incomplete subtasks. As the story is still open, we obviously know about open subtasks :-) and we just want to have it carried over to the next sprint.

can anyone confirm, that this may be related to

https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JSWCLOUD-16279

the error message is also misleading, as it states stories with all subtasks closed as the reason why we can't complete the sprint. however, we found by experimenting, that the open story was the problem.

found an answer ourselves: even filtered sub-tasks must have their final state assigned to the rightmost column of the sprint board.

tricky, because you can't assign them unless you unfilter them.... :-(

You have to look at all the sub-tasks on the issues listed, making sure they are all in the last column on the board.

Please read the post. I am looking for how to move the tasks into the next sprint automatically.

Please read the post yourself.  Not just my answer, but your own question.  The error message is telling you what is happening.

The behavior is incorrect though. It should be moving the tasks into the new sprint automatically.
Previously this was the behavior I experienced. The documentation also says it should provide a dialogue to choose where to move the unfinished items.

I also made a test board just now to test the behavior. With sub-tasks split to-do, in-progress and done, it provides the dialogue to choose where to move the unfinished tasks.

My current board, is not behaving as I believe it should be. To me this is an error.

If it isn't why is it behaving differently to other boards & the documentation? How do I fix it?

I am not sure how it is incorrect behaviour to not do something you should not be able to do.

You have an issue that you have put into the wrong status.  It is not complete, because it has open sub-tasks, so it should not be in the "done" column.  Move it back out of the "done" column and it will work fine.
