Can the JIRA Plan Mode be customized to show horizontal columns?

We find the default Plan Mode layout on JIRA Agile to be a little difficult to work with.

We'd like to configure the layout to work more like the Work Mode.

With columns like: Backlog – Sprint 3 – Sprint 2 – Sprint 1

Our ideal layout would use card sizes that match what they look like on the Work Mode view.

We're using Trello to do our backlog planning, but making the layout configurable to columns would make it so we could just work in JIRA Agile.

Can we do this now? Or do we need to request this feature?

That would require a rewrite of the entire Agile plan mode screen.  Or a plugin that provided a third type of board.  In other words, you'll need to do a lot of coding to do this!  

On a usability point, the plan mode is deliberately kept as short lines because a card view chews up a lot of space and isn't really usable for medium to large backlogs.

agreed. its not possible at this time and likely not on the radar.
