Can you reset a global field if someone customizes it

Megan Day March 2, 2020

We are on Jira cloud and someone on the team has customized the priority field without understanding it is a global field.  We don't have anything setup yet as we are just starting out.  Is there any way to get this reset with the full functionality?

So it turns out there is some interesting behavior in Jira when someone uses either reserved field names or tries to customize using the same field name followed by something like a period.  So this person created a custom field called "Priority" which worked correctly the first day but then the next day overtook all the Priority fields which aren't custom.  But luckily the original Priority field and values were still available and with deleting the custom field I could restore.  Then they also created a field called "Environment." which was again fine the first day but the next day began to show in the custom field names as "Environment" with the same kind of affect. I was able to back this all out thankfully but appreciate the help.

I would suggest the following steps:

  1. determine the priorities you wish to get rid of
  2. create a query for each of the to be removed priorities and then perform a bulk update and change the priorities to one you will keep
  3. repeat #2 for each to be removed
  4. delete the unused priorities - Jira settings > Issues > Priorities
