Can you set a custom plain text field for approvers?

Is there a way to set a custom plain text field for approvers rather than use user picker for single users/multiple users? I want users to have the ability to just enter the email of their managers that needs to approve. Once the request is submitted the approval email automatically gets sent to the email written in the field. Is is possible to do this or am I limited to using the user picker?

As far as I know, you will have to use the user picker at least for the actual approval part of the effort. Jira wouldn't be able to definitively ensure the user had the permissions, etc to be able to not just do the approval but even to log in to do it.

The other part of it is that if you allow a simple text field, you WILL get the wrong values entered. The user picker ensures you get a real user. Also, it is likely less keystrokes using the user picker as it is predictively searching vs. typing the entire (possibly wrong) email address
