Changing the avatar for a work types in a space (aka changing an issue type icon per project)

We're a Jira Cloud Enterprise user so we've just finally been forced to the new UI. A side effect that we weren't expecting is it seems as though some of the avatars (icons) for work types (issue types) in the space (project) have been changed.

I know that when we migrated to the Cloud in Oct of 2024 that we were able to modify these avatars/icons on a per project basis for our Company managed projects, and we did so.

Now after the new UI was rolled out to our site some of these avatars/icons have been changed, and it does not seem as though we are still able to change them on a per project basis. I'm not seeing the option on the Work Types or within the Work Schemes on a project basis. It appears as though we can change the avatar/icon for the Work Type globally, but historically we could do it on a per project basis. It seems as though this functionality might still be available for Team managed projects.

Am I just not finding this functionality within the new UI and nomenclature, or was it actually removed?

This may or may not actually be related to the new UI, it could just be coincidental timing.

Hi David,

I am not aware of ever being able to change the icons on a Project basis in Jira Cloud. It has always been a global level.

Adding to this can you show us issues of the same type from two different Company Managed projects where the icons are different?

I also am not aware of this ever having been an available feature.

Sorry, can't wasn't something we bothered to document in screenshots. We're only looking into it due to a client complaint and of course that's after the change happened. So we don't have access to a version in which they were still different.

So you're saying not only has the feature been removed but additionally all customization you did previously has been reverted?

And you're sure it was possible in Jira Cloud previously.

But nobody has any idea how it was done, and there is no evidence that it was ever done?

I've been searching the Internet for any indication such a thing could be done with either native functionality or an app. So far I haven't found anything.

Yes the previous customizations were removed/changed. It was part of our migration runbook to change the icons, we had a group that was very particular about their icons (they are the ones currently complaining). I did the proof of concept testing myself a year ago.

The instructions for changing the icon weren't in the runbook, because it used to be relatively intuitive.

If it can't be done anymore, it can't be done. The complaint comes on the heels of the new UI being rolled out to us, it may not be related. We're also on a batched release track which also would have happened in the last week.
