Gaby S. August 6, 2020

Hi!
I'm working on a classic project and when I create en filter, the Epic Link column is shown correctly, but the Epic name is empty.

Hi @Gaby S.

The Epic Name will only be shown if the issue type is "Epic" - this field is only populated on Epics, not on any other issue.

For the Epic's children, the name will usually be visualised via the issue search in "Epic Link"

Thanks for the feedback!

The issue is that when I export the filter to Google sheet, the Epic Link shows the URL and not the Epic Name.

Is there any way to display the Epic parent name of a ticket?

Thanks!

Hi @Gaby S.

Not by default - but you can use Automation to populate a field with the name.

To do this you'll need to be a Jira Admin / Site Admin and then this is how I've done it:

  1. Go to Jira Settings > Issues > Custom Fields (left-hand menu)
  2. Press the blue "Create Custom Field" button in the top-right corner
  3. Create the field "Text Field (Single Line)" - and give it a name
  4. You can then associate the field with a screen - but remember, this will allow users to manually edit it. I would either not add it to a screen - or only add it to the View screen. The latter would require creating a new screen and editing screen / issue type screen schemes - to see more on this, visit this page.
  5. Now you have your new field - go to Project Settings > Automation or for a global rule, Jira Settings > System > Automation Rules
  6. Press the blue "Create Rule" button in the top-right
  7. Choose a Trigger - for example, Issue Updated. I like to use "Multiple Issue Events" - and choose both Issue Updated and Issue Created so it covers all angles
  8. Then, choose the Action "Edit Issue" and choose to set your newly created custom field's value
  9. Next to the text box, select the breadcrumbs (3-dots icon) and choose "Copy From"
  10. Select the box, and choose to copy the value from the "Epic Issue" above the trigger issue, setting the custom field to match the field "Epic Name"
  11. Give the rule a name and publish it

^ This will provide a new field which duplicates the Epic Name when a child issue is created/updated. This custom field is text-based - so you can include it in your issue columns in your search, and export it as the name rather than the Epic Link's Issue Key.
