Clone/Copy Testexecution with Progress

Deleted user February 17, 2022

Hello,

what i want to do (Example):

  • There are 2 User Storys with Sprint = One
  • I have a Test Execution with 1 Testcase per US (two Testcases) with Sprint = One
  • After testing a while => Test 1 is Passed and Test 2 is in Executing
  • Now there will be a Sprint change to Sprint = Two
  • In Sprint Two
    - is a new User Story (with 1 Tescase)
    - and the moved User Story from previouse Sprint (with still the 1 Testcase)
  • NOW: I want to create a new Testexecution with Sprint = Two
    - Here should be the new Testcase from the new US
    - AND I WANT THE TESTCASE INKL. PROGRESS FROM THE LAST TEST EXECUTION WHICH MOVED FROM THE LAST SPRINT TO THE NEW ONE.

I tryed to clone the Test Execution, but the Progresses from the Testcases are not matched to the corresponding TestRuns anymore. Can i match that, so that the tester can continue testing without starting from beginning? If possible without introducing a TestPlan.

Thanks in advance

Hi @[deleted] ,

from the test coverage perspective you would never "loose" the progress. Test coverage always relates to what was defined as requirement that is tested.

From an organizational perspective (a multi year test manager and also scrum master):

  • Is there anything preventing you separate test executions --> 1 execution for each story? From my point of view this would come hand in hand with several advantages:
    • clean shape and affiliation of test execution (also in regard of DoD)
    • test execution is automatically created with the generated test from the story
    •  clear traceability and no need to copy any results (which as far as i know is not possible)

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have any further question.

Hi Stefan,

First of all, thx for the response.

I try to keep it as simple as possible for the testers and the Project Lead:

  • Tester: there is Only 1 Testexecution for the Tester, he just have to go inside this one and work on all the testcases from the Execution. So i prepare the Test Execution for him and say: Please work on that one until all Tests are finished.
  • Project Lead: There is only the one Testexecution with the Overall Status for the Sprint. So he just have to look at the Execution Status and sees the Test Progress for the Sprint

this way i would even do not need a TestPlan!

I just want to keep it as simple as possible for dummys :)

but i ran Into the problem with the Sprint change and moving Storys to the next Sprint because they are Not finished testing.

Both things need to fit to eacht other, wether tooling fits your process or vice versa.

The questions are:

  • Where is the focus? Does the process say the test mus be finished or is it important that a story is done/tested/covered by tests?
  • Do you really save time if YOU have to create a test execution from scratch and add the test cases manually each time? The time/effort is then just taken from other employees to you.

One of the main functionalities in xray is the testcoverage. It can be configured which issue types are covered by tests. Therefore you could choose Stories.

Let´s stick to your example:

  • There are 2 stories each of them covered by 1 test case. In Sprint 1 you create a test execution with test runs for test case 1 and test case 2 (keep in mind --> the test execution creates test runs which are instances of the test case).
  • Now let´s say only test run 1 is finished in Sprint 1
  • If you stick to having 1 test execution per sprint you could leave the 2nd test undone and create a new execution in sprint 2. The test coverage is still shown in story 1 (as the test case for this story was already executed with a result) --> so the project lead can see status directly in stories

Could that be a feasable solution? Please let me know if you have any question.

Best
Stefan
