Configure Board settings?

I've created a couple of project boards but I don't see anyway to to update my board settings.  I've used the only template available to me which is the "Use template" button on the "create project" option.  Then the next available option only to me is to choose the "team=managed project" option as a Type.   Following other suggestions in this community, I haven't been successful in moving forward.

Here's an image of my practice project board:

@Trudy Claspill  Thank you for the welcome, I just finished my profile info as well as I wanted to mention that I have a question into my IT director with regards to perhaps our limitations with our Jira cloud instance.  I have admin rights in Jira but I'm concerned about just how much of my access is.  We have other Jira boards that are Scrum boards and were heavily used but we're consolidating with what our software development team is doing.

Hello @Jean Ann Harrison

Welcome to the Atlassian community!

What settings are you trying to change?

In Jira Cloud there are two types of project architecture - Company Managed and Team Managed. Only Jira Administrators can create Company Managed projects. You might be familiar with accessing board settings for such project by clicking on the ... button in the upper right corner of the board.

Team Managed projects may be created by non-Jira Admins if the Jira Admins have enabled that functionality.

Team Managed projects use a different architecture, as they are intended to be stand-alone projects completely independent in their customizations from all other projects. This is an architecture that was developed after the Company Managed projects, and Atlassian was targeting different use cases with it. Not all the functionality available for Company Managed projects and boards is replicated in Team Managed projects and their boards. The configurable options for the boards are different.

You can find some board configuration options still under the ellipses button.

It you tell us what you want to change, we can provide more specific guidance.

There's a lot of information available on the differences between Company Managed and Team Managed projects, if you want to explore that. Here is one resource:

Thank you for your response.

Problem is I don't have any way of choosing "Company managed" type.  As your image shows "Release" dropdown with menu options.  I don't see anything that says "Release" or a dropdown menu similar to what you suggested.

In top right corner of my project board, I do an ellipsis which does show a menu which contains:  Edit spring" "Manage workflow", "Manage Custom filters" and finally "Configure board".  If I try the Configure board option, this takes me to a "Columns and statues page of the board.  But the left side of the project only shows the Column and statuses under the list of options, but nowhere do I see anything regarding "Board Settings."

In the end, what I want to see is "Issues" where I can have easy access to the issues (tickets) for my project.

Right now this is what I'm looking to do.  There will be more questions but I do need to resolve this portion first.

Many thanks

Hello @Jean Ann Harrison

As I said, only a Jira Administrator can create a Company Managed project. Since you are not a Jira Administrator, you would not have that option.

The Jira Administrators for your system have apparently enabled the option to allow users to create Team Managed projects.

You are not going to find anything labeled "Board Settings" specifically when using a Team Managed project.

If you are only familiar with Company Managed projects and want to have one of those instead, you will need to contact the Jira Administrators for your system to ask them to create that project for you.

Some of the options you might be familiar with for Board Settings may be found in a Team Managed project under Project Settings > Features, and others under Project Settings > Boards. You'll find those options in the navigation pane on the left. Some of the options you may be familiar with for Board Settings are not available in Team Managed projects at all.

If you are looking specifically for the "Issues" option in the navigation pane that would show you a list of your project issues, that is a option you can activate under Project Settings > Features.

With a Team Managed project, as the creator of that project, you will have options to create your own issue types, custom fields, and modify the workflow. Those changes would impact only your project. None of the changes you make would be available to other people to use in their projects. With Company Managed projects many customizations can be made only by Jira Administrators.

If you tell me more about how what you're seeing is not meeting your needs, I can provide more specific advice.

If Jira is all new to you I recommend that you visit Atlassian University and look at the self-paced classes there to become more familiar with the product. There are classes for all types of users from beginners to experts.

<edit>

I composed the above response before I saw your latest answer added to this thread. If you do have Jira Administrator rights, then you should've been able to create a Company Managed project. If you want to debug that process then we'll need to review the steps execute and screens you see when you are trying to create a project.

Hi Trudy;

Ah ha!  THAT was what I was looking for!  I didn't realize I needed to go to "Features" first and then activate.  Now I have what I needed.

MANY THANKS for your amazing patience and assistance.

I'll rely on this community in the future but I promise to try things myself first.  :)

I saw an email with a reply that you have maybe since edited or deleted, about you confirming your Jira Admin access.

If you are interested in debugging the project creation process, let me know. What you should see are options similar to this.

Select Projects > Create Project. Get a screen similar to this

Click on Scrum. Get a screen like this

Again, many thanks Trudy!  Unfortunately, the "company managed board option is greyed out in my Jira instance.  That is why I've stated I can only create a team managed board.   But maybe my IT director can answer why I cannot create that higher level board type,  However at this point, I don't believe I need it and now I'm happy to continue with my task of making my new board more efficient for my engineering team.  I'm working on doing just that.  I'm sure I'll bee posting more questions in the future but for today, I think I'm good.  Thank you so very much!!!

I'm glad I could help you!

If you don't have that option enabled, then you are not a Jira Administrator.

Another way to check if you are a Jira Administrator is to click on the gear icon near your avatar. If you are a Jira Administrator then you will see some or all of the Jira Settings options.

You are right, I was told I definitely was a Jira admin and was assured I was.  Apparently I'm a Jira Project Admin for the particular project board.  Fortunately I could create a new project (or three as it were) and I will reach out to my IT director again so that I do become a Jira Admin since I'm the only person in the company (small one right now) who actually does know a lot more than even my IT director when it comes to Jira and Confluence.
