Configuring a Kanban board - when I base swimlanes on epics, the tickets all disappear

I have a kanban board based on a filter that searches for tickets by Label and project. The correct tickets all show up fine but I want to split out the swimlanes into Epics.

When I configure the board and base the swimlanes on Epics, all tickets (stories, defects, epics, tasks, etc.) disappear except for those that aren't in Epics. How do I stop all the tickets disappearing?

I have tried including all Epic numbers in the Filter query. It makes no difference - any other ideas?

@Jacob Montgomery When you have configured the board (Board settings->Swimlanes-> Base Swinlanes on Epics); all Jira issues (Stories, Tasks etc. mapped to Epics) and Jira issues not mapped to Epics will show up. Just clik on ">" to show up the Jira issues.
