Create an object with a populated status attribute?

I have status as an attribute field type for an object type. I would like the field to be automatically populated with e.g. "Active" when creating a new object of that type. Users should then be able to change the status to one of the other available type values that I have listed as options at any time after creation.

How would I accomplish this "preselected" feature if at all possible?

I have Insight 6.2.3 running on Jira Server 7.8.0.
