Custom Filter "Parent Link" column is empty despite `parent IS NOT EMPTY` being true in the JQL.

I'm trying to display the results of the filter that include the Parent epic. None of the following columns show the parent epic:
- Parent Link
- Epic Link
- Links

Why can't I display the parent in the results of the filter? Very frustrating. Would appreciate help, ideally that isn't a hack to get around this creating more work for my team on an ongoing basis.
