Custom fields with thousands of values

Hello,

I need to create some sort of lookup field that will have thousands of values. A select list would not work because of the high volume of options. Because there are thousands of options, end users do not want to have a free text field especially since these values are fixed and important (which would have made things easier for me). Is there a way to configure Jira (either natively or through an add on) that will allow me to accomplish something like this?

I think I would use a Jira select custom field and then change it to use autocomplete, so users can type ahead and be prompted with different options for the field value. 

I've done this for a few thousand values. The set of options is downloaded to the client so autocomplete s fast to run but does take a little while longer to load an issue
