Default field/template within the description box in Jira cloud

Rashmi Advani April 14, 2025

Hi everyone,

I'm having some trouble adding custom field values—specifically text—directly into the description field in Jira. I understand this might be achievable through automation rules, but my goal is to have these values automatically appear in the description field when a new issue is being created.

Would anyone be able to guide me on how to set this up?

Hey @Rashmi Advani welcome to the community! 👋

If using a third-party app is an option for you, you can achieve this with description templates from Templating.app.

  • You can easily define default descriptions for certain issue types.
  • You can also set a description to appear based on other conditions, such as a specific assignee or label.

Hope this helps!

Hello @Rashmi Advani

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

Can you confirm you are working with the Jira Cloud product vs. Jira Data Center?

What is the type of the project you are using? Get that information from the Type column on the View All Projects page under the Projects menu.

If you are working with Cloud and are working with a Team Managed project, you can set default text for the Description field. If you are working with a Company Managed project, you cannot.

The work around in a Company Managed project is to create a separate custom Paragraph field where you can set default text. You add that field to the Create Issue screen for the issue types and projects where you need it. You remove the built-in Description field from those same screens. You then create an Automation Rule triggered by Issue Created that will copy the text from your custom field into the built-in Description field.

This is described in detail in these posts:

Hi Trudy,
I am working with the JIRA cloud and using team-managed projects.

If you are working with a Team Managed project, then go to Project Settings for that project.

Expand the Work Types section and select the work item type for which you want to set default test in the Description field.

In the center panel the fields shown for that work type will display. Expand the Description field by clicking the ... button to the right of it and select Edit Field

Fill in the section labeled Default description.

Click the Save changes button at the bottom of the screen.

You can set default text per work type. The text you enter will apply to all of the work items of that type when you initially create them, but it can be modified by the creator before they save the individual item.
