Default fields when creating an issue

Vamsi Fragale June 20, 2025

Every issue being created is defaulting to 'critical'. What do I need to change/update so the default is 'medium'?

Hello,

Welcome to community :)

Please find details below

- kindly navigate here https://xxxx.atlassian.net/jira/settings/issues/priority-schemes and you can check in your priority scheme what is the default set

- please note when you make changes here it would affected all the company managed projects

- incase that is okay you can change the default priority from critical to medium by clicking on actions edit on the same page

But if this change needs to be done only in one project then you can create a different priroity scheme here : https://xxxx.atlassian.net/jira/settings/issues/priority-schemes  tag that project and change priorities to default medium

More details here : https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/manage-priority-schemes/#Default-priority-scheme

Thank you,

Prachi

Hi @Vamsi Fragale

The Priority can be set or controlled in a few different ways, depending on whether you are using Team Managed or Company Managed projects.

Here is a breakdown of where to check that.

1. Check the Project's Default Priority.
Project Settings --> Priorities --> Default Priority

2. Check the automation; there can be automation that changes the priority after creation.

3. Workflow's Post Functions. Check the appropriate issue type's Workflow and Create Transition's Post Function, where it can be set to change the Priority after creation.

Let me know if there is any success.

Hi @Vamsi Fragale!

You should check in a ticket history if the value is being added by an automation, if that is the case then you'll need to update the automation. Otherwise, you need to check if the field has a default value set up: gear at the top right > Work items > Custom fields left menu > find the field > ... > Context and default value > check default value:

Hope I was able to help.

Kind regards,

Ana
