Description field tools were missing after adding content to the field on create screen, need to know how to get back without removing the content.

I am not sure if I understand what is meant by "description field tools". However, you can edit the description of a custom field by following this documentation under "How to edit a field description". 

If you are looking for history for custom field input by clicking on the "History" tab. This information is also available by using a third-party plugin.
