Display list field once a specific radio button/checkbox is selelcted

I have a a first list that a, b, c (either checkbox or radio button) and I have a different list for each option. I would like to have the list hidden until either option a or b or c is selected and if option a is displayed then it displayed  a list custom field assigned to a. The same for b & c.

It sounds like you should switch to a cascading select field. That is exactly what it is designed for.
