Displaying sprint- level capacity in a dashboard (not Original Estimate)

Ashley F February 12, 2024

I want to be able to display in our dashboards the percentage of sprint-level capacity against original estimate/remaining estimate/time spent. This does not look like it is an option at sprint-level.

From what I can see, capacity fields only exists at release-level and are not necessarily a 1:1 comparison to drilled-down ticket time details.

How can I get this view? Does it exist? And if not, what are the steps that can be taken for customization?

Hi @Ashley F

It's Mary from Planyway for Jira: capacity planner, roadmapping, time tracking and reporting.

Displaying sprint-level capacity against original estimate, remaining estimate, and time spent directly on Jira dashboards is indeed not a standard feature, especially because Jira's built-in functionalities tend to focus on broader metrics at the sprint or project level rather than detailed capacity planning at the individual or ticket level. However, you can still achieve this insight through a combination of Jira's reporting features, third-party apps, or custom solutions using Jira's API. Here's how you can approach it:

1. Utilize Jira Reports and Dashboards

Jira offers various reports that can help you indirectly gauge team capacity and performance, such as the Sprint Burndown Chart, which shows the remaining work in the sprint, or the Velocity Chart, which shows the amount of work completed in past sprints. While these don't directly show capacity against estimates, they can be used to infer if your team is over or under their capacity.

To customize your dashboards:

  • Gadgets: Look for gadgets that allow you to add estimates and track time, such as the "Sprint Health Gadget" or the "Workload Pie Chart Gadget". While these might not directly show capacity as a percentage, they can be used to monitor aspects of it.
  • Filters: Create specific JQL (Jira Query Language) filters to display issues based on their estimates and log work, and then use gadgets that can display issues from those filters.

2. Explore Marketplace Apps

There are numerous apps available in the Atlassian Marketplace that extend Jira's functionality to include more detailed time tracking and capacity planning. Apps like Planyway, Tempo Timesheets, Advanced Roadmaps, or BigPicture offer more granular control and insights over team capacity, sprint planning, and tracking against estimates.

3. Custom Development

If existing solutions do not meet your specific needs, you can consider developing a custom solution using Jira's API. This approach allows you to pull data directly from Jira and calculate the specific metrics you're interested in, such as sprint-level capacity vs. original/remaining estimates and time spent.

Steps for Customization:

  • API Data Extraction: Use Jira's REST API to extract data on sprint issues, including original estimates, remaining estimates, and time spent.
  • Calculation Logic: Develop a script or application that calculates the percentage of sprint-level capacity against the extracted data.
  • Visualization: Integrate your custom solution with a dashboarding tool or web application to visualize the metrics. You could also explore creating a custom Jira gadget or dashboard item if you have web development resources.

Hi @Ashley F  👋

Welcome to the community!

For displaying sprint-level capacity i suggest you to try Sprint Performance Report. This is not a dashboard, it is report. This report contains various metrics for each sprint. You can access it through the Time In Status for Jira add-on.

SP TV (1).pngI would be happy if you had a look at it!

Try Time In Status for Jira + Sprint Report for free.

You can also book a live demo - we'll show you the application inside out and answer all your questions.

Also i would be happy if you share your experience and needs here or through email: valeriia.h@saasjet.com

Have a nice day and happy sprinting 🥳
