Documentation on editing work item layout

Hi,

is there an updated version available somewhere for this:

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/configure-field-layout-in-the-work-item/

The description there is somewhat off from what I see in Jira Cloud.

What I find in Jira is:

Only the foremost tab on a screen is available for adjustments in the work item layout. For editing further tabs a link to the screen config is provided. Fields that are put on other tabs are not available in the field list of the item layout. So fields I want to have available for the work item layout mustn't be present on any other tab.

Above docs says nothing about it and the click paths are somehow strange.

Maybe an old/ new experience issue :)

Is this work in progress and will be enhanced/ completed later? Like supporting all tabs' editing? Or doing the tabs in the layout?

Confused interspersed with curious,

Sascha

Hi @Sascha H_ ,

I'd just have to agree that it's not an 'intuitive' behavior and something that you would expect when starting to configure screens and fields.

Basically, as you've discovered, only the first tab is managed through layout feature while others need to be updated by sorting fields within specific item screens. :/

I'd say documentation is correct, it just doesn't say that latter part about different tabs. You can, however, leave a feedback about documentation to the team who manages it so they will take that into consideration.

As for the behavior itself, I haven't managed to find any open feature suggestions related to that, but feel free to browse a bit and if you stumble upon anything, please do share the suggestion here.

Cheers,
Tobi

Hi @Tomislav Tobijas ,

it is funny, but even the very first sentence (well, not the heading and not the blue box) in your screenshot does not resemble the actual behavior of the system: The layout editor allows for adding fields that were not on the 'view' screen before. Saving will add the field to the screen in the background.

1. And from the Details there is no 'Edit fields' nor 'Manage fields', it's just 'Configure'.

Anyway, I appreciate your time and effort replying!

Cheerio,

Sascha

Hah, indeed @Sascha H_

I can just say that UI teams might need to coordinate a bit better with tech. writing teams as documentation is often not updated to reflect the actual interface design. I sometimes work with Atlassian teams and I can just say that Atlassian people are aware of this, but I'm not sure if any improvements or optimizations are in the works. 👀

Anyway, providing feedback that the docs are outdated will probably get them to 'fix' it sooner.
