Doesn't connect database when updating Jira

Jesús Pastor August 13, 2021

We have tried updating Jira from version 8.2.3 to version 8.18.1 and it updates fine but doesn't connect to the database.

I have reviewed the logs and it gives the following error:

  • 2021-08-12 18:06:48,156+0200 JIRA-Bootstrap ERROR      [c.a.config.bootstrap.DefaultAtlassianBootstrapManager] Could not successfully test your database:
com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: El controlador no pudo establecer una conexión segura con SQL Server con el cifrado de Capa de sockets seguros (SSL). Error: "The server selected protocol version TLS10 is not accepted by client preferences [TLS12]". ClientConnectionId:18777f3b-e54b-4137-87ed-4c84ffa963a7

The connection is made via SQL on a Windows Server 2008 R2 server. What is happening? Is it because the TLS 1.2 protocol is not installed on the SQL server? I have created this protocol with a registry key with this procedure (https://clouding.io/hc/es/articles/360015569559-C%C3%B3mo-activar-TLS-1-2-en-Windows-Server-2008-R2) and it still does not connect.

I have also checked that this KB (https://support.microsoft.com/es-es/topic/actualizar-para-habilitar-tls-1-1-y-tls-1-2-como-protocolos-seguros-predeterminados-en-winhttp-en-windows-c4bd73d2-31d7-761e-0178-11268bb10392) of the TLS 1.2 protocol was installed and it has it installed.

Can you help me? Thanks.

@Jesús Pastor Welcome the Atlassian Community

Before performing the upgrade you need to upgrade your SQL instance to a supported version.  2008 R2 is not supported.  Here is a list of supported SQL versions https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver/supported-platforms-938846830.html
