Email invites to new users creates the wrong user name

Lena Widmark March 22, 2022

Hi all!

When inviting new users from my domain to our Jira by sending an email it seems like Jira by default sets the full name to be the email address up until the @ sign.
So if I invite john.smith@company.com the full name of his user will be john.smith.

This makes it difficult to find these users in dropdowns to assign tasks to them and also sometimes to find them at all...
Is there a way to change the default Full name assignment?
Basically to make Jira replace the . with a space :)

Thanks!

Hi @Lena Widmark

Not that I know of - probably because there's so many different email address types out there. Invites only use email addresses to create a user, rather than providing an option to set their name, etc.

In unmanaged instances, the Atlassian Account belongs to the user. They can choose to update their own name if preferred - they need to...

  1. Go to Settings (cog icon in top-right) > Atlassian Account Settings
  2. Choose Profile and Visibility from the left-hand menu
  3. Update Full Name

In a managed instance (i.e in an Organization using Atlassian Access with a verified domain) the Org Admin can usually edit any verified user's account...

  1. Go to https://admin.atlassian.com/
  2. Access your Organization, and choose Directory from the navigation bar
  3. Choose a user
  4. Modify their Full Name

I find there's a really good description of how it works in Cloud at present on this feature request: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/ID-6415
