Error during upgrade

I am trying to upgrade Jira from 7.3.2 to 7.8.2 on a Windows Server 2012 64-bit server. I always run the installer as an administrator. During the installer I got an error, "could not delete C:\Program Files\Atlassian\JIRA\jre\lib\charsets.jar".  No one is in the server but me, and I'm pretty sure nothing is using this file. I clicked retry a few times, but that did not resolve the error. So I clicked cancel.

I tried to run the installer again, upgrade an existing Jira installation, but now it claims my existing Jira directory is not a valid Jira Core installation directory.

What should I do? Please help!

Hi Magnus

• The upgrade-installer should shut down jira itself. But to be sure, stop jira before starting the upgrade.
• Check if the file protected. On Windows right click on the file -> properties.
• Check if no other application accesses this file during the upgrade.  See resolution 3 in Upgrade of JIRA fails due to Error while attempting to remove the previous installation directory

Thank you for responding.

I have confirmed Jira is stopped.
I have confirmed charsets.jar is not protected.
I have confirmed no other application is using Jira in Process Explorer.

How do I get passed the issue of the installer thinking my current Jira is not a valid Jira Core installation directory?

I figured it out. The Jira installer deletes all the contents of the Jira installation directory and then copies in the new version files.  I was getting an error during the deletion of the current Jira installation directory.  Almost all the files were deleted.  This is why I was getting the error that the installation directory is invalid.

When you encounter an error or quick the installer, you need to restore your backup of your Jira installation directory before running the Jira installer again.

My original issue of files being in use during the installation was due to the Jira windows service being stuck in a state of stopping, but not stopped.  I had to manually taskkill it and then run the Jira installer again.

Had the same issue where I didn't realise the service was not stopped completely and was stuck in the stopping phase. glad to have stumbled upon your post.

Ran into the same issue with the service stuck in stopping instead of stopped.  Used sysinternals process explorer and found that the tomcat executable was still running... killed it, refreshed services window (jira service now gone), and retry on the installer message, all good from there.
