Formatting description of workflows, field configurations, and so on

Hello,

We are adding some formatting to the descriptions of our workflows, workflow schemes, field configuration schemes, and so on. In order to make descriptions easier to read, we are trying to apply formatting to the descriptions (for instance, line breaks, boldface, italics), but we can't seem to figure out a way to do so. 

Second, is there a way to add a live link in a description (for instance, to a Confluence page)? We have added URLs but cannot make them clickable. 

Does anyone have any experience formatting or adding live links to the descriptions of workflows and the like in Jira? If so, how do we go about it?
