Have you seen a a Jira ticket mysteriously appear in the active Sprint, when you hadn't added it?

Janet Lunde January 2, 2024

We've seen a few tickets show up in an Active sprint, in the Done column, that we had not added to the sprint.

In the Sprint Report, they are listed in the "Issues completed outside of this sprint" section.

The issues had previously been moved to status = Done, and Resolution was set to "Won't Do".

When we look through the History of these tickets, there is no step listed of the ticket being added to the sprint -- no edit is shown.

These tickets sat in the project in that Done state for some time, before showing up in the active sprint.

EDITED TO ADD: The tickets were added to a sprint, and then that sprint was deleted.

Hi @Janet Lunde , let me see if I have this straight. Is the following accurate?

  • At time T0 an issue (ABC-123) was moved to done/won't do.
  • At time T1 a sprint (Sprint-xxx) was started and issue ABC-123 was not in the sprint
  • At time T2, before Sprint-xxx was completed, issue ABC-123 appeared in the done column.
  •  In looking at the history tab of issue ABC-123 there is no entry where the sprint field was edited to include the Sprint-xxx. However, in looking at the sprint field of issue, ABC–123 sprint – XXX is indeed present.

assuming the above is true then I am quite puzzled, and certainly have never seen anything like that. So it could be a bug for sure or we're missing something. I would definitely closely look at the history tab.

That's exactly what happened. Thank you for the clear summary.

We did look closely at the History tab. Generally, the last edit shown in History was months earlier.

What about the possibilities Nic presented? I cannot think of any other possibilities that this would occur.

Could the board have been reconfigured?  If

  • the issues were moved to an unmapped status,
  • a status was re-mapped to a not-done column,
  • the "done" column is no longer the last, rightmost, column on the board,

then you could see what you describe happen
