I've used the free trial but now each time I attempt to buy Jira the screen goes blank. I've attempted this over various days and still the same results. Is it possible/necessary for them to wipe out my account and start new for the paid version?

No, you should be able to upgrade to a standard plan from your existing plan. For this type of issues, it is best to reach out directly to Atlassian support through https://support.atlassian.com/contact/#/
