Hello...am using Next Gen Cloud...and have added a custom person field (single name) that we then want to filter on.    The filter will allow me to select the custom field, but will not find available "users"...will only let me apply "current user".      Am I missing something?

I understand you're using a Jira Cloud next-gen board, and that you want to be able to filter the results on that board by user, which you've setup a customfield to select that user.

However I am confused at this point.  Because next-gen boards don't let you setup quick filters like those that you find in Classic projects at this point.  Nor do they let you setup the main filter for the board like classic project board let you.

That said, if you're just trying to filter the board to see which issues are assigned to which user, next-gen boards already have this ability natively built into them.  On a next-gen board you can see the user avatars on both the backlog and board views.  You can simply click the avatar of a single user to filter the board issues to only show those assigned to that user right now.

Does this help?  Or is this not the problem you are having here.  I'd like to know more about your environment so we can try to help here.  Perhaps a screenshot of what you are seeing here might help too.
