Hide parent key from summary column in Jira results

Hello, I can't seem to find an answer to this anywhere. When I run a filter query that returns sub-tasks in the results, the summary column always displays as [parent key] / [sub-task summary]. Is there a way to not show the parent key in the summary column? It's confusing for my users as the parent key doesn't provide any useful context. They just need to easily see the issue summary.

Hi Lisa,

It seems that there is no straight forward solution for your scenario at the moment, people has submitted a feature request to Atlassian for this subject. check this link

Meanwhile, I could suggest a work-around if this behavior is very confusing for your users.

  1.  Create a custom field under the name of 'Summary'. Do not add it to the create screen, just add it to the view/Edit Screens

  2. Create a project Automation Rule, use the trigger 'Field Value Changed' and use the action 'Edit Issue' to copy the value of the original summary to the new created custom field.

  3. Add the New custom field to your search view (check below for how it might look like).

  4. Only Perform this Step if You Want to Reflect on All Users' Default View Edit the System view to remove the original Summary Field and add the new created one,

Let me know how it went for you and if you need further elaboration for a specific step.

Cheers,

Karim

Hi Karim, thank you for the link and suggestion. While the feature request isn't exactly what we're looking to do, I've added my vote as it would still be an improvement over the current display.

I understand the workaround of creating a separate custom field, but I fear it would introduce a different type of confusion for my users. If there's no setting to change it, we'll just have to live with the default Jira behavior.

Hi @Lisa N

Since you mentioned that you are currently using Excel-like Issue Editor, you can use that app to view the sub-task's summary without [parent key] / [sub-task summary]. Simply click the spreadsheet icon on the filter results page.

You also can use our new JQL Editor feature to search the issues.

If you want to remove the [parent key] / [sub-task summary] format specifically in the filter results, unfortunately, the best solution is what is suggested by @Karim ABO HASHISH

If there is something that your team wants from filter results that are missing in the Excel-like Issue Editor, please let us know ;)

Have a great weekend!

Hi @Lisa N

if you're open to solutions from the Atlassian Marketplace, you might like the app that my team is working on, JXL for Jira.

JXL is a full-fledged spreadsheet/table view for your issues that allows viewing, inline-editing, sorting and filtering by all your issue fields. All issue fields are shown nicely and consistently for all issue types, including sub-tasks. This is how it looks in action:

subtask-summary.gif

Note that all of this "just works"; there's no scripting or automation required. It's also worth noting that there's much more to JXL than that - from inline-issue creation, to support for issue hierarchies, issue groupings, and sum-ups, to conditional formatting.

You may already know that you can trial any app for free for 1 month, so if the above looks interesting, give it a try and see if it provides value to you.

Hope this helps,

Best,

Hannes

Thanks Hannes, I'm looking for a solution that addresses the issue specifically in the filter results.

We already use an app called the Excel-Like Issue Editor. Are there any advantages that JXL for Jira has over the Excel-Like Issue Editor?

Hi @Lisa N

I believe JXL really shines when it comes to performance and scale (JXL will easily deal with thousands of issues and still feel snappy), and of course ease of use. There's also the many advanced features that I name-dropped above, which all fit perfectly together. Just to provide an example, it is really easy to build an interactive issue view like this in JXL, and still preserve the "spreadsheet-ness" that you know from e.g. Excel or Google Sheets:

Of course, if you simply want a plain table/list view of your issues, you can do that as well :)

The easiest might actually be to play around with it - JXL simply integrates into the project sidebar, so it's trivial to set up. You can also find more info on our website, and quick demo video here.
