How Can I Aggregate Custom Numeric Fields Under an Epic?

Vikrant Nallaparaju June 10, 2022

My company is trying to create better automation of key custom stats for Epics that our various product teams are working on. Two of these are new fields we created called Actual Days (Dev), which we use to track time developers spent coding, and Actual Days (QA), which tracks the same thing but for our QA engineers.

What we want is to create a way to have the values inputted for those fields under child tickets to flow into the Epic as an aggregate sum. For instance, if there were two child tickets under an Epic with the values of 5 days and 3 days for Actual Days (Dev), we'd want to see a value of 8 for the aggregate field (which we can call Actual Days (Dev) Total here).

Is there a plugin that would best fit our needs here to create that aggregate field on the main Epic ticket? Or should we be looking into building a custom report instead. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi @Vikrant Nallaparaju

welcome to the community!

Your problem can be very elegantly solved with the app that my team is working on, JXL for Jira.

JXL is a full-fledged spreadsheet/table view for your issues that allows viewing and inline-editing any issue field, including any custom field. It also supports issue hierarchies (both the "built-in" epic/story/sub-task hierarchy and fully custom hierarchies) and so-called sum-ups across such hierarchies.

This is how it looks in action:

As you can see above, you can easily edit your values (also in bulk, via copy/paste), and perform sorting and filtering operations. You can also configure the "style" of sum-up, e.g. to show the progress based on the issue status. If needed, you can also export to Excel or CSV for further processing.

(Please note that JXL is listed on the Marketplace as only for Cloud and Data Center, but it is perfectly compatible with Server too; it's just that we need to generate a license for you. If you feel you might like JXL, drop me an email at hannes at fine dot software and I'll be happy to generate a free trial for you.)

Hope this helps,

Hannes

HI @Vikrant Nallaparaju

Welcome to the community !!

To visualize the Issue hierarchy, we have created an add-on to track the progress at each level.

Also the app rolls up custom fields at each hierarchy level along with time estimates and story points.

Please try it out.

Agile Tools : Epic Tree, Links Tree, Time in Status & Worklogs

Key features:

  • Custom Field Roll up
  • Hierarchy upto 10 levels deep
  • Progress % on "remaining estimate" or "original estimates"
  • Edit Issue summary, time estimates, story points and assignee on the tree with real time updates in the progress
  • Rolled up percentage completion at all levels
  • Ability to add/remove the columns on the report
