How are tasks/issue ordered on the roadmap view?

Tasks seem out of order and very disorderly in the roadmap view for an epic.  Is there a way to sort tasks by step number?

Thank you for reaching out to Atlassian Community!

The child issues on a Roadmap of a Classic project are ordered by rank. On a Next-gen project, per my tests here, it’s ordered by the date it was added to the Epic. 

It’s not possible to sort the child issues, but you can manually reorder them. For more details, please check the documentation below:
