How can I abbreviate numbers in a custom field? (M = Million, k = thousand)

Hi,

Is there any way to abbreviate numbers in a custom field? (M= Million, k = thousand)

I have a "price" custom field and I'd like to display the number this way for readability. 

I could use a plain text custom field but then I don't think the numbers would sort correctly.
