How can I add tasks and not subtasks to stories under Epics in the roadmap?

I am new to the latest version of Jira and using the Roadmap. I am trying to do release planning with my team and wanted to add tasks to the stories identified under the Epics so that we could size them. I was able to configure subtasks to have the SP field but don't really like that path. Should I just change the name of subtasks to tasks? That doesn't seem like it will work w/ workflows.
