How can I create a limited assignee field

I want to create a field that I select a person from a group. For example, I have a developer group and a support group. At a point in the workflow I want to assign an Issue to a support person. I want the field to drop down and reveal only the people in the support group. I figure that then the actual transition can copy the name I select into the formal "Assignee" field.

I looked over the custom fields available and none seems to suggest that it can do this.

Ideas anyone?
