How can I create my issue description text outside of JIRA and copy it over with the formatting?

When we first started using JIRA, about three years ago, I was able to format my issues description using an outside editor and then copy it over to JIRA.  I would key in HTML-type codes such as .h1. There is even a document I downloaded to show me the codes to use.  Now if I try it does not recognize any of the codes. 

Is there a new process to allow me to do the same now

There is a note at the top of the page about field renderers that says in the new issue view rich text fields use Markdown. The note provides a link to the following page that provides the codes used in Markdown.
