How can I keep my issue ID format after importation?

Hello Community,

I am trying to consolidate information from various tools into JIRA for reporting purposes. I have successfully imported incidents from Remedy using a CSV upload and opted to use the the existing 10-digit ticket number as the issue key to differentiate the tickets from user stories native to JIRA (which were in the 3-digit range). However, after the importation all new issues and User Stories created natively are following the same 10-digit format as the remedy imports.

How can I go back to old 3-digit (soon to be 4 digit) format for native issues?

Best Regards,

John

Hi @John Drotar,

Please refer the following points with regard to how JIRA determines the sequence for Issue Key

  • The issue key number that should be used while creating a JIRA issue in a project is fetched from pcounter column in the project table. So, if you want to use a different sequence start numbers for issues being created in a given project, you can change the pcounter value. Going forward, JIRA will use the pcounter. Please note that this is not recommended practice and leave JIRA determine the issue key sequence.

In your case, you have two options:

  1. First option would be to use two different projects, one for native issues and another for tickets migrated to JIRA from external systems
  2. Second option would be to use one project for both native issues and issues migrated from external systems and let JIRA determine the issue key sequence. To differentiate between native and migrated tickets, you should be using a custom field like "External Ticket Id" and capture the 10 digit number for migrated tickets and for native tickets the custom field value will be empty.
