How can I make a custom field required when transitioning to done?

I'm using JIRA Software and trying to make a custom field called Planned Release required when moving a story from QA Complete to Done. The Planned Release field is a Version Picker (single selection) field type. The default value is null but on the interface it shows "Unknown". I've used Scriptrunner simple validation on other transitions and it works great, but not able to get this to work. I think because of the field type.

If you have JMWE installed, there is a "Field is required Validator" that can be used for this purpose.
