How can I make a field read only -- except for the sysadmin

I want certain fields protected, but I need the sysadmin to be able to change them if need be.

Field level permissions are not possible in JIRA. There are commericial solutions available in marketplace like Field Security plugin.

A usual workaround is to put that field only ona workflow screen and add admin only condition on the workflow transition!

That's what I was afraid of. But there is so much buried in the JIRA tunables that just because I can't find something doesn't mean it is not there!
