I don't really like the display of issues on the right side of the screen.
Even on landscape monitors, I don't like this format, and I do much of my work on portrait monitors, which squashes the information even more.
When I click on an issue link within an issue, I'd like Jira to either use the same or a new tab to display the item; I don't want it to appear on the right side.
In my case, most of the time when it displays on the right side, I click a second time to get the full-page display, so the current scheme just makes more work for me.
How can I disable the "right side" display of issues, ESPECIALLY for my portrait monitors?
Thanks @Stephen Garber for mentioning this, didn't realise this was released in 8.11. Much better way to hide the detail view without css.
Thanks
Disabling issue detail view can be done from the board settings:
Board > Hide detail view
But it's only available starting in Jira 8.11. If you are using a version before 8.11 the Jira admin can disable this globally in by adding a custom script to the announcement banner. Full details on the workaround are here:

I don't want to close the right-side panel ("Details View") after it has been opened. That can already be done by clicking the x at the upper right corner (in our installation, anyway).
Rather, I want to "turn off" (disable) Jira popping up these panels in the first place. I would want Jira to open up in the same tab or a new tab, with the full and complete issue display. You could think of it like a radio button:
Issue Linking:
o Use Details View (panel on right side)
o Open in new tab
o Open in same tab
Another option (though I'd still like to be able to prevent the Details View) would be something dynamic in Jira that would at least disable the feature when the screen real estate becomes too limited (as on my 26" portrait mode monitor).
