How can field values be combined and added to a field?

We have a customer who would like the vaues of 2 list fields combined, converted and added to a 3rd text field.   

Example:

A + 1 = R1

B + 2 = R1

B + 4 = R2

Can something like this be done and how?

Are all of these number fields?

No.

List 1 = A through E

List 2 = 1 through 5

The final result, the combination of List 1 and 2 will equate to a third value.   R1 to R5

However, thinking about this further, perhaps there is a way to display A-E but give them underlying numerical values.

A=1 B=2 C=3 D=4 E=5

I think you would have to do the numerical value. And you should be able to do that with Automation For Jira.
