How can the burndown chart show time remaining instead of Original estimate?

José Freire May 21, 2025

How can I have the burndown chart showing time reamining instead of Original Estimate? The only way I seem to have so far is to update the Original Estimate with the actual current estimate but that would defeat the purpose of having an original value to compare against.

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks

Hi @José Freire and welcome to the Community!

I guess this is in a team managed project? In there, you can indeed only choose between story points and original estimate as statistics.

If you would use company managed projects instead and a scrum board on top of it, you will find a burndown chart with plenty more options, remaining time estimate being one of them:

Hope this helps!

Hi, Walter, thanks!

It is a team-managed project, indeed.

Thanks for the suggestion. Would there be any downside in creating a new company-managed project and then moving everything from the current team-managed project there?

Also, are there any disadvantages in general in using company-managed vs team-managed projects?

Thanks

Hi @José Freire,

I usually recommend the customers we work with to simply not use team managed projects (unless they are really intended for a single team to work in isolation from the organisation and if you want to allow your teams to manage their work completely autonomously).

The only real disadvantage of company managed projects is that they are more complex to configure, since a lot of the configuration components is managed centrally and shared across multiple projects. But in that complexity also lies their power.

Migrating your data from a team managed to a company managed project is possible, but I do recommend you thoroughly read this support article on the topic first, as their are things to keep in mind.

Thanks for those insights, Walter.

I will give it a go after reading the support article you shared.

Really appreciate the help, this will most likely "fix" the issue.

Thanks!

Hi @José Freire,

Is this question about the Jira's Sprint Burndown Chart report, or about insights?

If is the Jira report, then the option in question should be above the chart, right near the sprint name.

But I saw that this option is not always available... Maybe this community post can be helpful to make it appear: https://community.atlassian.com/forums/Jira-questions/Remaining-Estimate-field-is-missing-in-burndown-charts/qaq-p/1174779

If you don't manage to make it work, you could look for an app (plugin) on Atlassian Marketplace that provides such report or gadget. In case you want to try an app, our Great Gadgets app offers a Sprint Burndown Burnup Chart gadget that offers the option to calculate by Remaining Time Estimate. On its data tab, it displays a sprint report similar to the one of Jira.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Danut. I only have options "Story Points", "Work item count" and "Time" available. Thanks for the plugin suggestion.
