How do I assign Epics to 'Initiatives"?

Sivakumar Kolli August 17, 2021

I have created an issue type called "Initiative" and "Theme" with the idea that I will have Epics in an 'Initiative' and Initiatives in a 'Theme'. But I don't see a way to assign epics to the initiatives.

Hi @Sivakumar Kolli

You can define this hierarchy on Advanced Roadmaps https://your-jira-instance.atlassian.net/secure/PortfolioHierarchy.jspa  and use the Parent Link custom field to create the relationship between them.

The documentation with steps to define the hierarchy is available at https://confluence.atlassian.com/advancedroadmapsserver/configuring-initiatives-and-other-hierarchy-levels-802170489.html

I hope it helps. If this answer helps solve the problem, please come back and mark this answer as solved to help other community members with the same challenge. If not, you are welcome to share your solution as well.

@Alex I will try the steps in the documentation, but the first link in your reply didn't work....it actually said "license violation"

Hi @Sivakumar Kolli

Make sure you change <your-jira-instance> to your Jira site URL

Sivakumar Kolli August 17, 2021

Thanks, that worked! Here's what I see...I do not have "Parent Link" custom field..Screenshot 2021-08-17 164323.png

Hi @Sivakumar Kolli

I'm glad it works. You need to add the Parent Link field to the Theme, Initiative and Epic screens.

Cheers,

Alex

@Alex

Hi Alex,

How do I add this 'Parent Link' field? Where is that configuration? Thanks

Actually, would it be possible to chat with me for few minutes to help me ? It would be easier to explain what I am trying to achieve.

Hi @Sivakumar Kolli

Sorry for the late response, busy days lately.

To add the Parent Link custom field to your issue screens (Initiative and Theme), you'll need to :

  1. Find the screens associated with the Theme and Initiative issue types on your Jira project and take note of their names. You can field them by selecting the Issue Type Screen Scheme of your project here:  https://your-jira-instance.atlassian.net/jira/settings/issues/issue-type-screen-schemes
  2. Navigate to the Custom Fields page or your instance  https://your-jira-instance.atlassian.net/secure/admin/ViewCustomFields.jspa
  3. Search for the Parent Link
  4. Click on the ... besides the Parent Link custom field
  5. Select Associate to Screensparent.png
  6. Search for the screen name from your notes on step 1 and select the checkbox beside the screen name/s

You have added the Parent link to the screens of the Theme and Initiative issue types.

Cheers,

Alex

@Sivakumar Kolli

A quick note on your Hierarchy screen. Make sure you select an issue type to be associated with Level Name on the first column of the table.

Cheers,

Alex

Hi @Alex ,

Thanks for following up. I still cannot get the Initiative & Theme issue types to be able to add Epics underneath them. As I asked for before...it would be easier to set up 15 mins for us to be on a screen share meeting session so you can help me quickly and easily. Can we please do that?

Thanks

Siva
