How do I create a custom field and apply it to multiple projects?

MichelleBushong May 5, 2020

Currently if we want to add "due date" as a field across our projects I have to add it to each project individually. This means for reporting and filters, I will have "due date" listed in my filter 5 times (once for each project). Same thing for other fields like, "company" and "prioritization".  This makes gadgets, filters and reporting difficult. We have 5 different types of projects some with workflows and 5 different companies. What do I need to do?

Hi @MichelleBushong,

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

Are your project set up using the next-gen templates or classic templates? If you go to a project you will have an indicator on the bottom left-hand side if you are in a next-gen project. Next-gen projects cannot share custom fields between them. Classic projects can share custom fields, so you can create one due date field and reuse it across multiple projects.

Thank you, Mikael. Our projects are Next-gen. We are using next-gen for 4 kanban board projects and 1 next gen service desk project.  Do you know what the impact of changing a Next-gen project to classic is?

If you change your projects over to classic you will loose the roadmap feature. Classic projects are more configurable, so you can control the workflow, fields, screens etc, which you cannot do in next-gen.

Thank you, Mikael. How do I move a project from Next Gen to Classic?

You can use the bulk change to move issues between projects. Have a look at Edit multiple issues at the same time for more information.

Thank you again. Appreciate the help.

@Mikael Sandberg How do I know if my project is Next-gen or not? Currently I only notice this in the left bottom side "You're in a team-managed project". I want to add the field Due Date (Provide by default but like an optional not mandatory) to several projects.

@Francisco Lagos If you go to Settings > Projects the list has a column that indicate if a project is CMP or TMP.

mmm... Thanks Mikael, but thats not what I looking for :D, All my Projects are TMP (Team Managed Project) can I add a field in Task across all projects?

@Francisco Lagos No, TMP projects should be considered as its own island, and cannot share any fields or settings with other projects. If you need to do that you have to use CMPs instead.
