How do I keep sub-tasks from appearing on kanban for issues still in backlog?

Cassie McCullough October 18, 2022

I am taking advantage of the new backlog feature with Kanban in Jira, however, we have stories yet to be refined with some sub-tasks already created and those are showing on my kanban board while my story is still in my backlog. Is there a way to keep the sub-tasks in the backlog as well until we're ready to move the story to ready status?

Hello @Cassie McCullough

Are you working with Jira Cloud or Jira Server/Data Center?

If you are working with Jira Cloud, are you working with a Team Managed project or a Company Managed project?

Are you an administrator for the board, for the project, or for Jira overall?

For Jira Server/Data Center or for Jira Cloud Company Managed project, to keep the sub-task off the board you will need to customize the sub-task workflow to prevent it from being able to move to one of the Statuses on the Board if its parent issue is not already in a Status that is on the Board.

For a Jira Cloud Team Managed project the solution would be different.

The exact steps to implement will depend on your hosting type, and the version (if Server/Data Center) you are using, and maybe some additional factors.
