How do I rename a custom field value?

I want to rename a custom field value in the custom field configuration. I am OK with deleting the old value and adding the new option, but will all the old issues retain the old value, or will the deleted value become blank on these issues?

If you delete, the values will be deleted as well. Editing an option is available in JIRA 4.4beta. Prior to 4.4, you can only modify it in the database. Don't forget to follow the rules of stopping JIRA, reindex after restart etc if you modify DB.
