How do I restrict user access to a project.

Angela Williams December 12, 2018

I have created a few projcts in Jira, for which I do not want anyone else to have access to except for myself. I am a Jira admin. I am struggling with locking the project down to only my access. The documentation is a bit confusing and we are new to using Jira. Can someone point me in the right direction?

First, are you on cloud or server? If cloud go to project > project settings > permissions. Therein you will see the role/groups that have the various project access. You need to be update this to only allow you to have any permissions.

And if you are using Next-gen then the answer differs.

Hi Jack

We are using the cloud service. I followed your instructions and still cannot figure out how to make individual projects have certain users. below is a screenshot of the project settings for a project I am looking to restrict so only I have access. when I follow the path you added in your reply is that to change permissions for individual projects or does that change all of them if I make a change here.

I typically create a group (jira settings > user management > group) and then I set the permissions (project > project settings > permissions). you need to be sure to remove any default roles/groups, e.g. jira-software-user, or any group that has unwanted user access.

there wasn't an image in your reply. Important: One thing to understand is if you are using a default scheme you don't want to edit it as it likely is shared w/ other projects so changes will impact those projects. You should create a project specific permission scheme. A quick way to find, and add) the permission schemes is to type "gg" (keyboard shortcut) then enter "permission".  This might be useful to read as well.
