How do I transfer a JIRA Board to a different account?

Asif Jafferali February 19, 2020

Hello Atlassian Community,

Issue Summary:

  • I have a JIRA Board with a list of Epics, I'm trying to export this information and re-import this to a client's Atlassian Account.

Questions:

  • Can you advise the best way to do this?

  • Perhaps there is a way to pass ownership of the Board? Or a way of transferring the information over?

Thanks!

there is no way to transfer ownership of a board. If you want someone else to own a board and be able to configure it then that individual can recreate the board. Hopefully the current board owner is accessible and can pull the filter that defines the board. If not it generally isn't difficult to figure it out and recreate. You can also go to Jira settings > System > shared filters and see if you can find the underlying filter there.

Hi @Jack Brickey , thanks for coming back to me (so quickly!).

I should elaborate that it's more the content of the board i'm trying to export for example the Epics & Stories. I'm the admin of the project / board so hopefully that might enable a few more access rights!

Or is my only option to re-write these?

ok so by "account" do you mean a different Jira instance? If so, depending on how big this is and if it is important to move all aspects of the project you can either consider a simple export and import or you may wish to look at an addon solution to retain all aspects of a project. If you simply want to move the issues/epics from project to project on the same instance then you can do a bulk move exercise.

@jack That's correct a different JIRA instance such as imagine if I was moving this board (with 70 TODO Epics & Stories) to your JIRA account.

Would you know what add-on I would need to export the data?

Thanks for your help / advice, much appreciated.

70 items or even 1000 I would do via export and import personally.

  1. set up the project in the new instance as you want it to be
  2. export all issues
  3. import issues and perform any cleanup e.g. epic to issue relationships
  4. create the new board

@Jack , thanks for this! The more basic question is how do I export the issues?

On Roadmap - there's an export which is just the PNG of what can be seen rather than the actual data.

On Board view - the only option that can be chosen is the Star icon.

Hope you can help, almost there!

You would export the issues from the filter that is used by your board.

The board is just a neat way to visualise progress of the issues coming from the filter; there is no functionality to perform export of the board.

Thanks @sukkeong , unfortunately I still can't see where the export is.

Could you list some steps on how to filter AND how to export?

Thanks!

Step 1: find your filter

  1. Menubar > Issues > Manage filters
  2. Select your target filter
    • there may be multiple pages of filters.
    • there is a search function to find filters by name

Step 2: Perform export

  1. Ensure you have the correct permission to perform export
  2. Look at the top right corner of the filter result, there will be a button, "Export".
  3. Click button "Export"
  4. Select format you wish to export, preferably CSV.

Note

  • Older JIRAs perform CSV export as a "HTML" formatted file - that is, the internal data when viewed as text is in <html> tags. You will need to use Excel to convert it to an ordinary CSV file.
  • If you do not have permission to perform export, please see your JIRA admin.
