How do I transition from Workflow rules to Automation

My Project is currently configured to change status and update assignee using a workflow. I would like to move away from this workflow to the new Automation feature. What is the best way to go about doing that? Ideally I would want to just remove the workflow and build the transitions using Automation but I can't seem to figure out how to do that. Is there some way of making the Automation take execution precedence over the workflow?

The transitions still have to exist in the workflow. But instead of putting post functions on those transitions, you can implement that functionality with Automation For Jira.
