So I have a client who used Trello (free version), but they aren't allowed to do so. So because the company doesn't want buy Trello, a lot op people want a Jira project for their Trello board. But the thing is, they're mostly personal to do lists.

Any tips?

Thank you so much!

Cheers!

There is no way to easily replicate the way Trello works in Jira, but you can get close if you've got Jira Software.

Create a Kanban project with the absolute minimum fields your users will find useful (You can take it down to nothing more than "summary" if you want, but it's probably better to allow Description as well).  Let all your users into the project with create/edit/comment etc.  Have a think about the board filter - you want some way to allow people to archive/hide their cards, so you probably want to filter for the resolution (Set the filter to "Project = X and resolution is empty")

Then there are a couple of things to think about now - one project or many?

One Project:

  • Set the permissions to all users, or at least the people who need a to-do list
  • You will need to define a security scheme that has one default level that allows "reporter" to see their issues.
  • Where it fails (to be Trello): the workflow is what defines columns - all users of the project will need to agree on a set of status and the columns on the board, they can't define their own columns without changing the board for everyone.

Many projects:

  • Set the permission scheme for the project to only allow in the project lead (you can do other things, but project lead is the easiest one to work with initially)
  • Set the workflow to "simplified" - this will allow the project owner to create whatever columns they want because it is only their project being configured
  • Downside - do you really want to have to create a project and board (and permissions and workflow) for every user who wants this functionality?
