How do you write f(x) without the (x) turning into a red X?

I want to type exp(x) and ln(x) in a JIRA post but I get this:

How do I escape the JIRA markup? I've tried (\x) and it doesn't work.

Try escaping the parenthesis like this:

f\(x) or f\(x\)
