How does JIRA link to Stash branches?

From the Development section in JIRA, I can create a Stash branch fine, and commit messages with the JIRA issue show up as well, but my question is: how does JIRA link to Stash branches? Is it merely from the name of the branch? If so, why does a branch not show up if it was not created directly from JIRA even if the branch name contains the JIRA issue?

OK - so I'll answer my own question: the linking is done entirely by the branch name, meaning the branch must contain the JIRA issue in order to be 'linked'. Please note that this does not happen immediately after the creation of the branch when branch creation is not done through JIRA - it takes a few minutes.
