My team started a project with a SCRUM board. We started a 3-week sprint using stories in the backlog but decided that the team would be better off using a Kanban approach rather than SCRUM. Reading through the various articles on how to add a Kanban board to an existing Project tells me to select the Projects menu/Create New Project option which seems strange to me as I just want to create a new board on the existing project and not a net new project. I followed the instructions and created a new Kanban Project but I am not able to associate the existing backlog items to it. How do I connect the existing backlog items to my new Kanban Project/board?
I am sorry that the answer you got before was misleading - it was generated by an AI that has no understanding of your question or Atlassian software.
I suspect you are looking at a team-managed project. (Check the bottom left-hand corner of the screen - it will say team or company managed). These only have one project board, you can't add more boards to them.
You can add boards in company-managed projects, and not just boards for those projects, as you can base them on filters. Run a search for "project = <my team-managed project>" and save it with a descriptive name. Then go to any CMP and create a new board, selecting your saved filter as the basis for it. (You don't have to lock it to the CMP, you can create "personal" boards at the bottom of the project list)
You can't associate your existing backlog from a TMP with a board for another project directly. You would have to move all the issues from the existing TMP to the new one.
Or use a CMP based board.

Click on the search box in the upper right in the top nav bar.
Then select Boards in the bottom of the popup.
Then click on the Create Board button.
